Mares Hershey

Institute for Practical Democracy

Ms. Hershey is
the Director Of Development for Portlandwest, Portland, Maine. She is also a founder & director of the Institute for Practical
Democracy, a Youth Leadership Development Program. Now in its eighth
year. A graduate in Political Science from Michigan State University,
Ms. Hershey has studied electronic journalism in a Columbia University Graduate School of
Journalism Program, Vietnamese Culture and Language at the Foreign Service Institute and
Intercultural Communication at the Institute for Cross-Culture Communication in Portland, Oregon.
She is a former Dean of Students at Colby College, and continues working today as a Fine Arts Artist
& Writer. She has been appointed to the Maine Arts Commission
as a Commissioner and
is on its committee for Community
Arts. Her daughter Rebecca
grew up in Maine, graduated
from Cornell
University and works for the American Civil
Liberties Union in
